Kolkata, May 15: In response to the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices, West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh defended the government, stating that despite global conflicts and crises, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shielded the nation from excessive burdens. He emphasized that the price hikes have been minimal to prevent undue hardship for citizens.
While addressing reporters, Ghosh remarked, “The ongoing global conflicts have created numerous challenges for other countries. The increase in our nation’s fuel prices was not an abrupt decision by PM Modi. Only gas prices have risen, and it was anticipated that such increases would eventually occur. The rise in petrol and diesel prices has been kept to a minimum. The public should understand this and use fuel judiciously.”
He pointed out that oil companies are currently facing significant losses, amounting to thousands of crores. However, there is a limit to how much burden they can bear, which is why only necessary increases have been implemented. This issue is not unique to India; it is a global phenomenon. The central government is working in the public’s interest.”
Ghosh also addressed the recent arrest of Kolkata’s DGP Shantanu Sinha Biswas, stating, “There are many officials in government offices, police administration, and other departments involved in embezzlement, misappropriation of public funds, and misuse of power. This has become a longstanding issue. There are several leaders and ministers involved as well.”
It is noteworthy that new fuel rates were announced nationwide last Friday. In the capital, Kolkata, petrol prices have risen by ₹3.14 per liter to ₹97.77, while diesel prices have increased by ₹3.11, reaching ₹90.67 per liter.
