New Delhi, May 15: May 16 marks a significant day in Sanatan Dharma, as it will witness the simultaneous celebration of Vat Savitri Vrat and Shani Jayanti. The Vat Savitri Vrat, observed on the Amavasya of Jyeshtha Krishna, is dedicated to married women who pray for the long life, happiness, and health of their husbands. On this day, special rituals are performed to appease Lord Shani, the son of the Sun God, through prayers, havans, and oil abhisheks.
According to ancient tales, Savitri showcased her intelligence and devotion to reclaim her husband Satyavan’s life from Yamraj. This narrative inspires women to worship the banyan tree and observe the fast. On Shani Jayanti, devotees perform Shani Shanti puja and oil abhishek to ward off Shani dosh and Sade Sati.
Women observing the fast will offer water, flowers, rice, and fruits at the roots of the banyan tree, which holds special significance. Devotees of Shani can donate black sesame seeds, mustard oil, and iron items. Religious scriptures suggest that these rituals and fasts lead to family happiness, health, and liberation from Shani dosh.
As per the Drik Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi begins on May 16 at 5:11 AM and lasts until 1:30 AM on May 17. Sunrise will occur at 5:30 AM, and sunset at 7:05 PM.
