Punjab Kings Suffer Fifth Consecutive Loss, Shreyas Iyer Sets Unwanted Record

Dharmshala, May 15: In the 58th match of IPL 2026, Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced a 6-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI). This marks PBKS’s fifth consecutive loss. With this defeat, captain Shreyas Iyer has set an unwanted record.

Iyer now holds the record for the most matches lost while defending a target of over 200 runs as a captain in IPL history. This was his seventh match facing a target above 200 runs, and no other captain has lost more than five matches in such scenarios.

As captain, Iyer has led his team in 20 matches where they needed to defend a target of over 200 runs. During this period, he has secured 12 victories but has faced defeat in 7 matches. Notably, this is the tenth time Punjab Kings has lost while defending a target of over 200 runs in T20 cricket.

Since 2022, Iyer had not lost against Mumbai Indians as captain, but that streak ended on Thursday. He had previously won all 7 matches against MI. Gautam Gambhir holds the record for the most consecutive wins against a single team, having led Kolkata Knight Riders to 8 victories against Punjab Kings.

Batting first at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Punjab Kings scored 200 runs, losing 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Prabhsimran Singh played a stellar innings, scoring 57 runs off 32 balls, while Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 38 runs off 17 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes.

However, Mumbai Indians chased down the target of 201 runs, losing only 4 wickets in 19.5 overs. Tilak Varma was the standout performer, scoring 75 runs off 33 balls, while Ryan Rickelton added 48 runs off 23 balls. Tilak’s innings included 6 fours and 6 sixes. Will Jacks remained unbeaten with 25 runs off 10 balls, leading his team to victory.
