The ongoing trade dispute between India and the United States has taken a new turn after US President Donald Trump imposed a unilateral 50% tariff on Indian goods—a rate even higher than the maximum 34% tariff on China, America’s biggest rival. India has called this step unfair, and there is growing opposition in India. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to buy Indian products over foreign brands, strengthening the push for a self-reliant India.

What If Indians Stop Buying US Brands?

If every Indian consumer and distributor started giving preference to Indian products instead of American brands, US imports would decrease and India’s economy would be strengthened. For this, not just individual consumers, but distributors and retailers across the country would need to prioritize non-US products. Experts suggest that the government could also take counter-measures like raising tariffs on US goods.

The presence of US companies is massive in every sector in India. If Indians start boycotting American products, it could seriously impact these companies and hurt the US economy as well. American brands are present in almost every Indian household—from kitchen products to clothes, footwear, gadgets, and food.

Could a Boycott Really Hurt America?

If even a fraction of India’s 140 crore population shifted their buying habits away from American brands, it would cause significant financial losses for these multinational companies and, in turn, for the US economy. However, experts say real impact would depend on how strongly and how widely such a movement is adopted—not just by individuals, but by businesses, distributors, and policymakers.
