Antigua, June 1: Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Notable among the selections is the return of Shimron Hetmyer to the ODI team.
This decision is believed to be influenced by the upcoming ODI World Cup next year. CWI stated that Hetmyer will join the team before the third and final match. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph also makes a comeback after being sidelined since July 2025 due to a back injury. Additionally, Gudakesh Motie has been included, having missed the series against New Zealand in November.
Joseph is set to play his first international match since the tour of Australia last year after recovering from his back injury. The series will take place from June 3 to June 8 at Sabina Park in Jamaica. This series marks a crucial start for the West Indies as they aim to qualify directly for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
West Indies coach Darren Sammy emphasized that Sri Lanka is a strong and disciplined ODI team. Their players know how to play patiently and intelligently according to the conditions. He noted that this series presents a great opportunity for his team to set the standard for their game. The team aims to demonstrate quick fielding, clear batting strategies, and consistent bowling performance.
According to Sammy, the West Indies strive to play fearless yet intelligent cricket, aiming to establish a strong identity for the team. He further stated that their goal is to make their home ground a fortress, where it becomes challenging for opposing teams to secure victories. He wants the entire team to perform well collectively, rather than relying on the brilliance of individual players for success.
He mentioned that the team has been working with this mindset for the past 18 months. Following the three ODIs against Sri Lanka on June 3, 6, and 8, both teams will play three T20 internationals in Jamaica, followed by two Test matches in Antigua.
West Indies ODI Team: Shai Hope (Captain/Wicketkeeper), Akeem Auguste, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Ford, Justin Greaves, Shimron Hetmyer, Aamir Jangoo, Alzarri Joseph, Shamarh Brooks, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, and Shamar Springer.
