Modi and Myanmar President Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties

New Delhi, June 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing on Monday at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The leaders discussed ways to enhance the relationship between India and Myanmar.

The meeting focused on increasing cooperation in various sectors, including trade, economy, technology, and people-to-people connections.

President Hlaing is also scheduled to meet with President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi. Additionally, he will visit the exhibition “The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One” at the Rai Pithora Cultural Complex, located at the Qutub Golf Course. This significant international exhibition showcases the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha.

Earlier, on Sunday, President Hlaing met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Delhi to discuss security cooperation issues. On Saturday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also held discussions with President Hlaing.

After their meeting, Jaishankar expressed his pleasure on the social media platform X, stating, “It was a pleasure to meet Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi. I appreciate his positive approach to deepening the longstanding cooperation between India and Myanmar.” He added, “I hope that his meeting with Prime Minister Modi will further advance our partnership for peace, progress, and prosperity.”

President Hlaing arrived in New Delhi on Saturday, where he was welcomed by Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh at the airport. Following the welcome, Singh shared on X, “It is an honor to welcome Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing upon his arrival in Delhi. His visit reflects the long-standing cultural, civilizational, and people-to-people ties between India and Myanmar. It also presents an opportunity to strengthen our partnership across various sectors and advance our shared goals of regional peace, prosperity, and connectivity.”

Previously, President Hlaing began his five-day visit to India from Gaya in Bihar. Upon his arrival, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “This visit reflects the deep spiritual, historical, and people-to-people connections between India and Myanmar. It also demonstrates the strengthening of ongoing cooperation between the two countries.”

This is President Hlaing’s first visit to India since taking office. He will also participate in a business forum, accompanied by a high-level delegation of cabinet ministers, senior officials, and industry representatives.

On June 2, President Hlaing will travel to Mumbai, where he will meet with representatives from the industry and business sectors and visit several important sites.
