Kolkata, June 1: Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Lok Sabha member, is expected to arrive at the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters by Monday afternoon. This appearance is related to inquiries concerning alleged discrepancies in the signatures of party legislators on nominations for key positions in the West Bengal Assembly.
Speculation surrounds his potential appearance before the CID. This development follows an incident of alleged misconduct and assault that occurred on May 30 in Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
On Saturday, two private hospitals refused to admit Abhishek Banerjee, officially stating that “admission is not necessary.” Subsequently, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee brought him back to his residence on Kalighat Road in South Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee also announced that a “hospital-like facility” has been established at her nephew’s residence to ensure proper medical care.
This raises the question of whether Abhishek Banerjee will present himself at the CID headquarters in Bhawanipur, which is quite close to his residence. The CID had issued a notice for questioning on May 30. Initially, agency investigators visited his home on Harish Mukherjee Road to deliver the notice. Later, upon learning that Banerjee was at his second residence in Kalighat, CID officials went there to personally hand him the notice. Abhishek Banerjee later stated that he would cooperate with the investigation while following appropriate legal advice.
However, he did not clarify why he received the notice for questioning. Sources familiar with the situation indicate that the notice is related to the CID’s ongoing investigation into alleged discrepancies in the signatures of some Trinamool Congress legislators on nomination proposals for the leader of the opposition, two deputy leaders, and the chief whip in the West Bengal Assembly.
Before the proposals were submitted, Abhishek Banerjee sent a letter to the Assembly Secretariat designating Shovandev Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition, Nayana Bandyopadhyay and Asima Patra as deputy leaders, and Firhad Hakim, the mayor of Kolkata, as the chief whip.
However, Chairman Rathendra Bose insisted on presenting the proposal with the signatures of Trinamool Congress legislators. After discrepancies were found in some signatures, the matter was referred to the CID.
