New Delhi, June 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the Indian team for their outstanding performance at the 22nd Asian U-20 Athletics Championship. The team showcased remarkable talent, winning a total of 19 medals, including 10 golds. The Prime Minister described this achievement as a reflection of the determination and excellence of young athletes.
On social media platform X, he wrote, “Congratulations to the Indian team for winning 19 medals, including 10 golds, at the 22nd Asian U-20 Athletics Championship. This impressive performance highlights the unwavering spirit and hard work of our young athletes. I hope these successes inspire more young Indians to excel in sports in the coming years.”
The Indian team concluded their campaign on a high note, adding three gold medals on the final day and securing second place overall. In addition to the 10 golds, the team also earned five silvers and four bronzes. However, this performance does not surpass India’s best showing in the tournament, which occurred in 2024 in Dubai, where they claimed 29 medals, including 7 golds, 11 silvers, and 11 bronzes.
On the last day of competition, Indian athletes delivered stellar performances. Muskaan completed the women’s 5,000 meters in 16 minutes 53.08 seconds. Meanwhile, Nishchay won a silver medal in the men’s discus throw with a throw of 60.10 meters, setting a new national U-20 record. Mowgli Venkataram Reddy secured gold in the men’s 800 meters with a time of 1 minute 48.27 seconds. Additionally, Neeru Pathak played a crucial role in helping the Indian women’s 4×400 meters relay team win gold.
The Indian women’s 4×400 meters relay team not only won gold but also set a new meet record, finishing in 3 minutes 38.07 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 3 minutes 38.20 seconds set by Japan in 2018. The winning team included Neeru Pathak, Bhoomika Sanjay Nehate, Tahura Khatun, and Sahnoor Bawa.
The Indian men’s 4×400 meters relay team also performed admirably, clocking in at 3 minutes 05.54 seconds, breaking the old meet record of 3 minutes 07.38 seconds. However, due to stronger performances from other teams, India had to settle for a bronze medal. The team consisted of Piyush Raj, Syed Sabir, Ranjit Kumar S, and Mohammad Ashfaq. Additionally, the Indian women’s 4×100 meters relay team secured a silver medal, finishing in 45.05 seconds, with members Kajal Hirabhai Waja, Bhavna, Aarti, and Nipam.
