Amaravati, April 5: Tensions escalated in the town of Akiwidu, located in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district, on Sunday as police detained leaders from various organizations. These leaders were en route to demand the construction of a temple dedicated to a local deity.
Police intervened and detained leaders and activists from Hindu groups who were advancing towards the town.
In light of ongoing disputes between Hindus and Dalits, additional security forces have been deployed due to calls for a rally by Hindu organizations.
To prevent any gatherings, a prohibition order has been enforced in the town. Authorities have made it clear that no rallies or public meetings will be allowed.
Police officials have warned that strict action will be taken against anyone violating the prohibition order.
A checkpoint has been established near the town to inspect every vehicle entering the area. Buses from the Road Transport Corporation (RTC) are also being checked to ensure that outsiders do not enter the town and cause disturbances.
Actress Karate Kalyani was detained by police in Eluru district’s Kaikalur while she was on her way to Akiwidu in support of the temple construction demand.
She has been placed in precautionary custody to prevent her from reaching Akiwidu and condemned the police action. In a video message to her supporters, she urged them not to lose hope, stating that she would eventually visit Akiwidu.
Last week, during the celebration of Sri Ram Navami, an incident occurred in the Pedapeta area of Akiwidu when some individuals attacked the convoy of Vice Chairman K. Raghu Ram Krishna Raju after he offered flowers to an idol of Lord Ram.
Local Dalits had requested the Vice Chairman not to offer flowers to the idol. However, after he did so and returned to his car, some individuals attacked the convoy with stones and sticks while chanting “Jai Bhim,” resulting in injuries to three people.
This temple has been at the center of controversy for the past month and is believed to have been established in 1932.
