
San Francisco, May 27: A devastating incident occurred at a pulp and paper mill in Longview, Washington, where a chemical tank explosion resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries.
In a joint statement released on social media, Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company and local authorities confirmed that the explosion caused severe injuries to several individuals, with some tragically losing their lives. However, the exact number of casualties has not yet been disclosed.
According to local police, fire department officials, and company representatives, the explosion happened on Tuesday morning when a tank containing a chemical known as White Liquor ruptured. This chemical is utilized in the paper-making process.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson expressed his condolences on social media for the victims of the incident and stated that teams from the state’s Ecology Department have been dispatched to the scene.
He remarked, “My team and I are closely monitoring the situation regarding this significant chemical explosion in Longview. Officials from our state’s Ecology Department have arrived on-site. It is heartbreaking to hear that lives have been lost in this tragedy. My thoughts are with the employees, their families, and the responders.”
The Longview Fire Department reported that they are actively responding to the hazardous chemical incident at the Nippon Dynawave factory. Many individuals suffered burns and injuries from the explosion and have been transported to hospitals for treatment.
Authorities indicated that there is currently no threat to the general public; however, residents have been advised to stay away from the area to facilitate rescue and recovery operations.
The factory is located along the Columbia River, near the border of Washington and Oregon. According to the Washington State Department of Ecology, the site includes a craft pulp and paper mill as well as a liquid packaging plant. An investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing.
