Prime Minister Research Chair: A Global Initiative to Connect Indian Talent with Research

New Delhi, June 2: The Indian government has taken a significant step to promote science, research, and new technologies in the country. The Ministry of Education has launched the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) scheme for 2026. This initiative aims to connect Indian-origin scientists, researchers, and technical experts working in various countries with leading universities and research institutions in India.

The PMRC scheme encompasses 13 key areas, aligning research and innovation with the country’s strategic needs. These areas include advanced computing (AI, quantum computing, and supercomputing), semiconductors, energy, and climate change. Additionally, it covers cybersecurity, health and medical technology, biotechnology, advanced materials and critical minerals, space, and defense. The scheme also includes next-generation communication technologies, manufacturing and Industry 4.0, agricultural and food technology, the blue economy, and nuclear energy.

To ensure the successful implementation of this scheme, seven prestigious institutions have been selected as lead institutions. These include IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Dhanbad, and the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. According to the Ministry of Education, this is an ambitious national initiative aimed at connecting Indian-origin scientists and professionals working in renowned universities, research institutions, laboratories, and industries worldwide with India’s leading academic and research institutions.

This initiative comes at a time when India is rapidly advancing towards establishing global leadership in fields such as AI, quantum technology, semiconductors, space science, defense research, and biotechnology. The government’s goal is to empower the Indian research ecosystem with the knowledge, experience, and expertise of experienced Indian professionals working abroad. The technologies developed in these areas are considered crucial for the future economy, national security, and sustainable development.

The scheme will be based on three pillars: lead institutions, host institutions, and PMRC fellows. Lead institutions will provide coordination and guidance across various subject areas. Host institutions will offer researchers the necessary laboratories, research infrastructure, and academic collaboration. Meanwhile, PMRC fellows will lead high-level research activities in India through their global experience and expertise. The selection process will be overseen by a high-level empowered committee chaired by the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.

This will ensure that selected projects align with national needs and have a broad impact. Selected PMRC fellows will receive fellowships, research grants, access to modern laboratories, and opportunities to collaborate with India’s leading government research and educational institutions. Through this initiative, Indian-origin experts working abroad will be able to conduct long-term research projects in India and mentor the next generation of scientists.

The scheme will provide Indian universities and national laboratories with direct collaboration opportunities with world-class researchers. Outstanding Indian-origin researchers, scientists, and professionals will be eligible for this initiative. This includes Indian citizens working abroad, OCI cardholders, and other qualified individuals of Indian origin. The application process for fellows and host institutions under the Prime Minister Research Chair scheme 2026 began on June 1, 2026. Interested candidates and eligible institutions can apply through the PMRC portal.
