Kerala Assembly Erupts Over Inflation Debate, Opposition Walks Out Amid Controversy

Thiruvananthapuram, June 2: The Kerala Assembly witnessed chaos over inflation when the Speaker rejected a suspension motion proposed by the opposition. In protest, the opposition coalition staged a walkout from the house.

After the opposition left, B.B. Gopakumar, a legislator from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and leader of the party’s parliamentary group, stood to express his views. However, the Speaker informed him that his party had not signed the notice for the suspension motion related to inflation. According to assembly procedures, this meant that his party did not have the right to make a statement after the walkout.

The Speaker noted that Gopakumar was a new member of the assembly and might not be fully aware of all the procedures. Considering this, he granted him special permission to speak. The Speaker clarified that this decision was made solely for this specific situation and should not be regarded as a precedent for future assembly proceedings.

Meanwhile, opposition members returned to the house and strongly protested the special allowance given to the BJP legislator. They argued that it was inappropriate to grant such an opportunity to a party that had not supported the relevant proposal.

The atmosphere in the assembly became increasingly tense due to the opposition’s protests. Heated exchanges occurred between both sides, disrupting the assembly’s proceedings. The Speaker appealed for order, but the uproar continued for some time.

What began as a debate on inflation escalated into a discussion about assembly procedures and rules. This incident heightened political tensions within the house and led to multiple disruptions during the session.
