Crackdown on Script-Based Bookings
The move comes after Indian Railways observed suspicious booking patterns during Tatkal reservation windows. From May 24 to June 2, a pattern analysis of Tatkal AC ticket bookings revealed that a massive number of tickets were being secured within the first minute of the booking window opening. This raised concerns, as such rapid transactions are nearly impossible for an average user who must manually log in, fill out details, and verify via OTP.
Railway authorities found that 62% of AC Tatkal tickets were booked within the first 10 minutes, and 86% were gone within the first hour. The numbers were equally alarming for non-AC classes. Investigations revealed that many users were relying on automated scripts and bots—software tools that unfairly gain advantage over genuine passengers.
Over 2.4 Crore Fake Accounts Deleted
To address the issue, Indian Railways developed AI-based detection software that has already deactivated over 2.4 crore fake accounts in the last six months. Another 20 lakh accounts are currently under scrutiny for suspicious activity.
The Railways emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader initiative to make online booking more transparent and fair for the public. Going forward, only Aadhaar-verified users will be able to book Tatkal tickets during the first 10 minutes of the window opening.
Agents and Unauthorized Bookings Also Curtailed
The new rule also restricts authorized agents. They will now be allowed to book Tatkal tickets only 10 minutes after the booking window opens, giving the general public an initial advantage and reducing dependency on agents who often charge hefty commissions.
This change is expected to significantly curb black marketing and give ordinary passengers a fair chance to book tickets during high-demand hours.
Why Aadhaar Verification Is Critical
IRCTC currently has over 13 crore active accounts, but only 1.2 crore are Aadhaar-verified. With the latest directive, Indian Railways plans to verify the remaining accounts. Any account not linked with Aadhaar will be marked for deactivation. This step aims to ensure that only genuine passengers can access the Tatkal booking facility.
How to Verify Your IRCTC Account with Aadhaar
If you haven’t verified your IRCTC account yet, here’s how to do it:
-
Visit www.irctc.co.in and log in with your credentials.
-
Go to ‘My Profile’.
-
Click on ‘Aadhaar KYC’ and enter your Aadhaar number.
-
Complete OTP verification sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
Once verified, your account will be tagged as legitimate, and you will be eligible for early Tatkal access.
Final Word
The Indian Railways’ new Aadhaar verification rule marks a strong step toward cleaner digital ticketing operations. With millions of passengers relying on IRCTC daily, the platform’s integrity is crucial. Linking Aadhaar not only helps in curbing fraudulent bookings but also enhances user accountability and security.
