Driving Over-Age Cars in Delhi Can Now Cost You ₹10,000 Fine — New Rules Enforced from July 1

Updated: 02-07-2025, 07.59 PM

New Delhi – The Delhi government has begun cracking down hard on over-age vehicles in the city. From July 1, 2025, stringent new rules have come into effect that prohibit the use of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years. Violators face not just confiscation of their vehicles, but also hefty fines — up to ₹10,000 for four-wheelers.

Strict Enforcement Begins Across Delhi

The new rules are part of Delhi’s broader push to improve air quality and enforce end-of-life (EOL) vehicle regulations more aggressively. Any such vehicle found plying on roads or even attempting to refuel at petrol pumps is now liable to be seized on the spot.

As per the guidelines, over-age diesel and petrol vehicles are no longer allowed to be refueled in Delhi. The government has directed fuel stations to deny fuel to any non-compliant vehicles.

80 Vehicles Seized on Day 1

In a clear sign of aggressive enforcement, authorities seized 80 vehicles on the very first day of the campaign.

  • 45 vehicles were impounded by the Transport Department

  • 34 vehicles were seized by the Delhi Police

  • 1 vehicle was taken by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi

Officials report that within the first few hours — between 6 am and 1 pm — 24 vehicles had already been confiscated. Cameras and ground enforcement teams are being used extensively to detect violators.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

If your vehicle is found to be in violation of these age limits:

  • ₹10,000 fine for four-wheelers

  • ₹5,000 fine for two-wheelers

  • Towing and parking fees are additional

  • Vehicle owners must sign an undertaking that they will not drive or park the vehicle anywhere in public areas and will move it outside Delhi.

Fuel stations will also have the authority to report and prevent over-age vehicles from being refueled.

Vehicle Scrapping and NOC Rules

Seized vehicles will be sent to registered scrapping facilities (RVSF). If vehicle owners wish to move their old vehicles out of Delhi, they must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) within one year of the vehicle reaching its end-of-life stage.

Expansion to NCR from November

The Delhi government has confirmed that this rule will be extended to five NCR districts starting November 1, 2025:

  • Gurugram

  • Faridabad

  • Ghaziabad

  • Gautam Buddha Nagar

  • Sonipat

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed at fuel stations in these areas by the end of October to automatically flag over-age vehicles.

What Vehicle Owners Should Do Now

If your vehicle is nearing its 10-year (diesel) or 15-year (petrol) limit:

  • Do not drive it in public areas within Delhi.

  • Avoid petrol pumps, as you may be caught and fined.

  • Consider scrapping or relocating the vehicle outside Delhi with a valid NOC.

  • Monitor your registration documents to ensure compliance with local transport regulations.
