New Delhi, April 10: In a significant development for India’s energy sector, coal supply from the Gare Palma Sector-2 (GP2) coal mine in Raigarh district, Chhattisgarh, officially commenced on Thursday.
This initiative is expected to strengthen fuel supply to power plants in Maharashtra and ensure long-term energy security. The coal block is being developed for the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited, a government entity responsible for most of the electricity generation in Maharashtra.
With the start of coal shipments, coal from Chhattisgarh will now directly support thermal power stations in Maharashtra, making fuel supply more stable and reliable.
The Gare Palma Sector-2 mine is estimated to hold around 655 million tons of coal, with a maximum production capacity of 23.6 million tons per year. Once fully operational, this project is anticipated to generate significant revenue for Chhattisgarh through royalties, contributions to the District Mineral Foundation (DMF), Goods and Services Tax (GST), and other taxes.
Over time, the total direct revenue potential is estimated to be around ₹29,000 crore. In addition to revenue, this project will also promote local economic development.
It is expected to create over 3,400 direct jobs, along with indirect employment in sectors such as transport, construction, hospitality, and other ancillary services. This will greatly enhance the livelihoods of people in the area.
The project emphasizes community development through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. An initial budget of ₹35 crore has been allocated for health care, education, sanitation, infrastructure, and skill development programs.
Moreover, 2% of the annual net profit from the project will be invested in local development activities. Rehabilitation and resettlement plans are being implemented for 1,679 families from 14 affected villages.
Environmental protection measures are also integrated into the project design. Initiatives such as tree planting, creating green belts, pollution control systems, water conservation, and land restoration after mine closure are being undertaken to maintain ecological balance.
