China Seeks to Mediate Tensions Between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Beijing, March 16: China has expressed its willingness to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Chinese government stated, “We are prepared to continue our efforts to reduce tensions,” emphasizing that preventing further deterioration of the situation is currently the most critical task.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry highlighted the necessity of dialogue and restraint between Pakistan and Afghanistan to maintain regional stability. It stressed that the immediate priority is to avoid escalating tensions further.

Beijing also mentioned that it is in contact with both neighboring countries and will continue to promote efforts to resolve differences through dialogue and diplomatic means. China believes that stability in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations is vital for regional security and economic cooperation.

The Chinese government urged both nations to exercise restraint and avoid any form of confrontation, asserting that resolving disputes peacefully is in the best interest of the region.

Previously, China had also indicated its willingness to mediate. On Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. Following their conversation, a statement was released emphasizing the importance of resolving disputes between Afghanistan and Pakistan through dialogue and consultation rather than military force.

According to the statement, Wang called for both sides to exercise restraint, establish communication, implement an immediate ceasefire, and resolve their differences. He warned that further use of force would complicate the situation and escalate tensions in the region.

Since February 2026, both neighboring countries have been conducting airstrikes against each other. Pakistan accused Kabul of allowing terrorist camps to thrive and launched an airstrike on February 22, claiming to target these camps and their associated infrastructure. Afghanistan responded to this attack, leading to significant destruction of Pakistani military posts along the border. Tensions have since reached a peak between the two nations.
