Ujjain, June 3: A remarkable surge of devotion was witnessed at the world-renowned Mahakal Temple in Ujjain on the third day of the Krishna Paksha during the month of Jyeshtha. Thousands of devotees from across the country and abroad flocked to witness the divine Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. The temple complex resonated with the chants of Shiva devotees.
Devotees began queuing up late Tuesday night to participate in the Bhasma Aarti. Despite standing in line all night, their enthusiasm remained undiminished. Everyone was eager to catch a glimpse of their beloved deity.
As per tradition, the temple doors were opened early Wednesday morning after receiving permission from Lord Veerabhadra. The sight of their deity left the devotees overwhelmed with emotion, as they filled the air with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Mahakal.” The ceremony began with the offering of water for the deity’s bath, followed by anointing Baba with Panchamrit made from milk, yogurt, ghee, sugar, and honey. The atmosphere became completely divine with the chanting of mantras in the sanctum sanctorum. Afterward, Baba was adorned with special decorations.
On Wednesdays, Baba is adorned in the form of Ganesh. Initially, he was shaped into the form of Ganesh, and then decorated accordingly. A trident was crafted on his head, and he was adorned with a garland of flowers. Following this, the Mahanirvani Akhada offered Bhasma to Baba Mahakal. The sound of conch shells, damru, and bells during the Bhasma Aarti created a profoundly spiritual atmosphere. The temple complex was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and chanting, creating an ambiance of devotion and faith.
Each day, Baba’s special Bhasma Aarti concludes with a different adornment. During this time, Lord Mahakal is considered formless, so it is mandatory for women to cover their heads with a veil. Men are required to wear dhotis and upper garments, while women must wear sarees to participate in the Aarti.
