New Delhi, June 1: Efforts to stabilize conditions in West Asia are ongoing globally. Discussions about a potential agreement between the U.S. and Iran are intensifying. Israel plays a crucial role in this scenario, prompting questions about its perspective. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered strikes on Hezbollah positions in southern suburbs of Beirut on Monday. What are the underlying reasons for this action?
In an interview regarding the latest developments in West Asia, we spoke with Reuven Azar, the Israeli ambassador to India.
When asked about the concept of “Greater West Asia” and its impact on traditional geopolitical balances, Azar stated, “Iranian power has posed a threat to people for the past two decades. Several countries, including Jordan, which support the Abraham Accords, want to eliminate this threat. Discussions with the U.S. are ongoing. We are also vigilant about the security of this region and are prepared to assist economically to foster prosperity.”
The Iranian ambassador had referred to the uranium enrichment program as “their legal right.” In response, Azar emphasized that anyone wishing to operate under legal rights must also adhere to the established regulations. He accused Iran of misleading the international community for years and failing to comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) rules. He claimed that IAEA reports have also indicated Iran’s non-compliance.
Ambassador Azar warned that Israel could resort to military action against Iran if necessary. He lamented that, unfortunately, Iran cannot be trusted, and therefore, caution is essential regarding ceasefire conditions.
Regarding ongoing actions in Lebanon, Azar stated, “Israel must do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of its citizens living in northern areas. Over 1,000 rockets have been fired, drones have been used, and 12 people have died since the ceasefire. This situation is unacceptable. Until Hezbollah acknowledges a permanent ceasefire to halt attacks, operations will continue.”
