New Delhi, June 3: Seasonal changes significantly affect children and the elderly. Currently, many regions in India are experiencing extreme heat, which poses physical and mental challenges for senior citizens. In response, the Ministry of Ayush recommends incorporating Sheetali Pranayama into daily routines as an effective solution to combat internal heat.
This ancient yogic breathing technique cools the body from within and reduces stress. In Sheetali Pranayama, the tongue is extended and curled into a tube shape, allowing for a slow inhalation. Afterward, the mouth is closed, and exhalation occurs through the nose. This simple practice helps balance internal body heat. It is particularly beneficial for the elderly, who often face increased heat, irritability, and sleep issues.
According to the Ministry of Ayush, this pranayama not only cools the body but also calms the mind. It alleviates fatigue, irritation, and stress commonly associated with summer. Regular practice helps regulate blood pressure and strengthens the digestive system. As people age, they may encounter joint issues, anxiety, and insomnia. Sheetali Pranayama can naturally alleviate these problems.
This year’s International Yoga Day theme is “Yoga for Healthy Aging.” The Ministry encourages individuals to incorporate simple yoga practices into their daily routines to maintain health, balance, and happiness at every stage of life. Sheetali Pranayama is one of these recommended practices.
To practice Sheetali Pranayama, find a quiet and clean space to sit comfortably. Close your eyes and relax your body. Extend your tongue and form it into a tube. Slowly inhale through your mouth, then close your mouth and exhale through your nose. Start with 5-10 repetitions, gradually increasing the duration.
Experts suggest that practicing this technique in the morning and evening during hot weather is most effective. It not only reduces physical heat but also promotes mental tranquility. For the elderly, this practice is beneficial for maintaining energy and leading a stress-free life.
