
Chennai, June 3: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning for 16 districts in Tamil Nadu for Wednesday and Thursday. Several areas in the state are already experiencing intense rainfall, leading to flooding, power outages, property damage, and injuries.
According to the weather department, districts such as Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai are likely to see heavy rainfall in the next two days.
The IMD also indicated that conditions are favorable for the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala on Thursday. This warning comes at a time when heavy rainfall on Tuesday has already impacted daily life in several districts of Tamil Nadu.
In Rasipuram, Namakkal district, rainwater has accumulated near the government hospital, forcing patients and their families to wade through knee-deep water. The new bus stand market area also experienced flooding, disrupting business activities.
In Tirupattur district, hail was reported in Ambur, Alangakuppam, and Periyankuppam. Strong winds uprooted trees in several locations. A tree fell on a house near the Nagalammam temple in Vinamangalum, while a large banyan tree collapsed on the Dandu Mariamman temple.
In Tiruvannamalai district, heavy rainfall lasting over three hours was recorded in Arni, Savur, Kunnathur, and Kamakkur, causing power outages and affecting daily life. In Melanagar village, a tamarind tree fell on a moving mini-bus, injuring more than ten passengers, including the driver.
Heavy rainfall was also reported in Tiruppur, Erode, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Shivaganga, and Dindigul districts. Many roads were flooded, and power supply was disrupted in parts of Madurai, including Mattuthavani, Periyar bus stand, Simakkal, Melur, Thirumangalam, and the airport area.
In the hill station of Kodaikanal, dense fog suddenly enveloped the area in the evening, accompanied by light rain. Visibility dropped significantly in many areas, creating a night-like atmosphere during the day.
For Chennai, the weather department predicts partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rain in some areas, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
