Tamil Nadu Confirms Admission for Nearly 25,000 Students Under RTE Act

Chennai, June 3: The Tamil Nadu government has confirmed the admission of 24,868 students for the 2026-27 academic year under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. Education officials anticipate that this number will significantly increase by the end of the week as parents complete the admission process.

According to the Directorate of Matriculation Schools, a total of 251,537 applications have been received for 82,888 seats available under the RTE quota across 7,740 private schools in the state.

As per the RTE Act, private unaided schools are mandated to reserve 25% of seats at the entry level for children from economically weaker and disadvantaged sections of society.

A senior official from the education department stated that the admission process is ongoing in various districts, with expectations of more confirmations, especially from rural and remote areas where parents may require additional time to complete documentation and school formalities.

The official noted, “As of Tuesday afternoon, 24,868 seats were confirmed based on parental acceptance. We expect this number to rise over the weekend as the remaining selected candidates finalize their admission process.”

Current figures indicate steady progress in the implementation of the RTE admission process. Last academic year, a total of 63,991 seats were filled under this scheme across Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, the state government has initiated a parallel campaign aimed at strengthening the monitoring of fee collection practices in private schools. The Directorate of Matriculation Schools has instructed district and regional education officers to gather details of the fee structures from all private educational institutions operating in the state.

This move follows directives from the Tamil Nadu Fee Determination Committee, which regulates fee collection in private schools.

According to an official circular, authorities have been asked to collect information from schools affiliated with various boards, including Matriculation, CBSE, and other recognized educational systems operating in Tamil Nadu.

This campaign is being conducted under the Tamil Nadu Schools (Regulation of Collection of Fees) Act, 2009.

Officials have been directed to compile details of the approved fee structures for the current academic year and present them to the committee for review.

District Chief Education Officers have been tasked with coordinating the data collection process and ensuring timely submission of information received from all eligible schools. Education department officials stated that this initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote transparency in school fee collection and ensure strict compliance with statutory regulations governing private educational institutions.
