Remembering Mehboob Khan: The Visionary Behind Mother India

Mumbai, May 28: In the annals of Indian cinema, the name Mehboob Khan is revered with great respect. He was a filmmaker who, despite facing poverty, struggle, and constant rejection, never lost hope and ultimately gifted the world the classic film ‘Mother India.’

The journey from his village to Mumbai was far from easy. There was a time when producers would laugh at his scripts and shut the door in his face. Yet, Mehboob Khan refused to let his dreams shatter.

Born on September 9, 1906, in a modest family in Sarar village near Vadodara, Gujarat, Mehboob had a passion for films from a young age. He would often catch trains to nearby towns to watch movies, returning home quietly. His family thought he was just wandering, but within him burned a unique passion for cinema.

As he entered his youth, Mehboob Khan resolved to become a hero and decided to pursue a career in films in Mumbai. However, when his father learned of his ambitions, he brought him back home and even beat him. To secure his future, they arranged a marriage, hoping he would abandon his cinematic dreams. Mehboob eventually became a father, but his love for films only deepened. After much struggle, he returned to Mumbai and began seeking work outside studios.

In Mumbai, he spent hours outside Jyoti Studios near VT Station, enduring significant hardships. Many nights were spent on railway platforms, but he never lost heart.

Time passed, and Mehboob met filmmaker Ardeshir Irani, who offered him small roles in films. He began his career as an extra, gradually landing minor roles. Despite being dismissed from one film, he soon realized that his true strength lay not in acting but in storytelling and direction.

He began writing his stories and approached various producers. During that time, many mocked his scripts, and few took him seriously. However, after persistent efforts, his first directed film, ‘Al Hilal,’ was released in 1935. The film received a positive response, marking the beginning of Mehboob Khan’s successful journey.

He went on to direct several remarkable films, including ‘Ek Hi Raasta,’ ‘Aurat,’ ‘Roti,’ ‘Anmol Ghadi,’ ‘Andaaz,’ and ‘Aan.’ His films often highlighted social issues and strong female characters, earning him recognition as a progressive and feminist filmmaker in Indian cinema.

Mehboob Khan not only created films but also established ‘Mehboob Studios,’ a modern studio that was considered to have Hollywood-style facilities at the time.

His greatest achievement came in 1957 with the release of ‘Mother India.’ Starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, and Raj Kumar, this film is regarded as one of the most memorable in Indian cinema. It tells the story of a mother’s struggle, sacrifice, and dignity. Notably, ‘Mother India’ was a reimagining of his earlier film ‘Aurat.’

‘Mother India’ was nominated for an Oscar, and although it did not win, it gave Indian cinema a new identity on the global stage. Today, it remains one of the most influential films in Indian film history.

Mehboob Khan passed away on May 28, 1964, at the age of 56.
