21st UN Vesak Day Celebrated in Wuxi, China

Beijing, May 27: The 21st United Nations Vesak Day was inaugurated on May 26 in Wuxi, a city in eastern China. Wang Huning, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, sent a congratulatory message for the celebration and welcomed the attendees.

Wang Huning emphasized that Vesak Day is a significant festival for Buddhists worldwide, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and nirvana of Buddha. He noted that the international council of UN Vesak Day has contributed significantly to fostering friendly exchanges among Buddhist communities across various countries and regions, in line with the spirit of UN resolutions. This initiative aims to deepen friendships among people and promote global peace and equitable development.

He stated that China consistently supports the Buddhist community’s engagement in exchanges based on freedom, equality, friendship, and mutual respect with Buddhist communities from different countries and regions. Furthermore, China backs participation in activities organized by the UN Vesak Day Council and other international Buddhist organizations.

The 21st UN Vesak Day is organized by the international council, co-hosted by the Chinese Buddhist Association and the Buddhist Association of Jiangsu Province. Approximately 1,000 representatives and scholars from the Buddhist community across 67 countries and regions attended the event.
