
Beijing, May 27: As the rotating president of the UN Security Council this month, China convened a high-level meeting focused on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centered International Order.”
The meeting was chaired by Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese Foreign Minister. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres provided insights into the current global situation during the session, which saw participation from representatives of over 100 countries, including foreign ministers and senior officials from more than 20 nations.
In his address, Wang Yi remarked that the current international landscape is undergoing some of the most complex and profound changes since World War II. He stated that humanity’s ship has entered dangerous waters, and the path to global peace and development stands at a critical juncture. According to him, the existing challenges test the international community’s resolve to maintain peace, uphold justice, and demonstrate the courage for innovation. He called on all nations to unite in strengthening and enhancing the effectiveness of the UN.
Wang Yi emphasized the need to first revive the spirit of the UN Charter and demonstrate strong leadership. He also highlighted the importance of enhancing the authority and influence of the Security Council while increasing its operational capacity. Furthermore, he stressed the necessity of bolstering international development cooperation, reforming the global governance system, and improving the efficiency of the UN system.
He noted that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the People’s Republic of China’s legitimate seat in the UN. Over the past 55 years, China has played an active and constructive role as a permanent member of the Security Council. Wang expressed confidence that China will continue to fulfill its responsibilities, strengthen multilateralism, promote a more just and equitable global governance system, and work alongside other nations towards building a community with a shared future for humanity.
