Kolkata, May 27: The sudden death of renowned Bengali filmmaker and National Award winner Anik Dutta has sent shockwaves throughout West Bengal. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has expressed his condolences regarding Dutta’s passing. He shared a heartfelt message on the social media platform ‘X’, conveying his sorrow over the loss.
In his post, CM Adhikari stated, “I am saddened by the sudden demise of famous filmmaker Anik Dutta. His contributions to Bengali cinema are invaluable. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends. I trust that the Kolkata Police will investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding his untimely death and bring the truth to light.”
Reports indicate that Anik Dutta fell from the roof of his home in the Gariahat area of Kolkata. Following the incident, he was rushed to a private hospital near Dhakuria, where he was pronounced dead by doctors. However, the exact cause of his death remains unclear. Was it a slip, an accident, or something more?
According to reports, police have cordoned off the scene and have begun questioning nearby residents.
The news of Anik Dutta’s passing has triggered an outpouring of grief in the Bengali film industry. Notable figures such as actress Shreelekha Mitra, actor Rudranil Ghosh, and director Arindam Sil have paid tribute to him.
Dutta gained significant recognition with his 2012 film ‘Bhooter Bhobishyot’, which offered a sharp critique of political and social systems. He went on to direct several other films, including ‘Aashchorjyo Pradeep’, ‘Meghnad Badh Rahasya’, ‘Barun Babu’s Friends’, and ‘Aparajito’. For ‘Aparajito’, he received two National Awards in 2024.
