Mild Earthquake Hits Doda, Jammu and Kashmir with Magnitude of 2.2

New Delhi, March 2: A mild earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale was felt early Monday in Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or casualties so far. According to initial reports, the tremor struck at 1:02 AM Indian Standard Time, with its epicenter located at a depth of 10 kilometers, at coordinates 32.95° N latitude and 76.06° E longitude.

Earlier, on January 19, a stronger earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred in the Leh region of Ladakh. The tremors were felt with varying intensity across Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. Mukhtar Ahmed, the director of the local meteorological department, reported that the earthquake struck at 11:51 AM, with its epicenter in Leh at coordinates 36.71° N latitude and 74.32° E longitude, occurring 171 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface.

The January 19 earthquake was also felt across different areas of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, but no reports of damage were received. Both the Ladakh region and parts of the valley are known to be seismically sensitive areas.

It is noteworthy that on October 8, 2005, a devastating earthquake measuring 7.6 struck at 8:50 AM, with its epicenter in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This earthquake caused widespread destruction in Muzaffarabad and affected areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Jammu and Kashmir. It was recorded as one of the deadliest earthquakes in the region, surpassing even the 1935 Quetta earthquake in terms of fatalities.
