IPL 2026: Vaibhav Suryavanshi Reflects on Near-Record Century Miss

Chandigarh, May 28: In the IPL 2026 eliminator match, Vaibhav Suryavanshi delivered an explosive performance that thrilled fans. Playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, he scored 97 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

After the innings, Vaibhav shared, “I knew this was a knockout game and a big match. All the coaches advised me to stick to what I practiced, enjoy the game, and not feel the pressure of this match.”

Vaibhav narrowly missed a record century. He explained, “I played that shot looking at the fielder, which is why I mistimed it. If I had aimed for the third man, it would have cleared easily. But I tried to hit it straight, and that’s why I missed my shot.”

Opening the innings for RR, Vaibhav scored 97 runs off just 29 balls, hitting 12 sixes and 5 fours. He came close to breaking the record for the fastest century in IPL history, currently held by Chris Gayle, who scored a century in just 30 balls in 2013.

However, Vaibhav did break Gayle’s record for the most sixes in a single season. After this innings, he has hit a total of 65 sixes in IPL 2026, surpassing Gayle’s 59 sixes in IPL 2012.

Vaibhav was dismissed as the first wicket after scoring 97 runs, with RR’s score at 125 runs after 8 overs. Following his departure, SRH bowlers made a comeback, restricting RR to 243 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs. RR managed only 36 runs in the last 5 overs, scoring just 5 runs in the final over.
