Hyderabad, May 28: Political rhetoric has intensified following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists announced on Wednesday. BJP leaders Ramchandra Rao and Manmeet Singh welcomed the decision, asserting that the confusion surrounding SIR was unfounded and urged the public not to be misled on this issue.
Ramchandra Rao emphasized that SIR is neither a new nor a controversial process. Instead, it is a routine exercise conducted by the Election Commission to ensure that the voter list remains accurate and up-to-date. He explained that this process involves removing names of individuals who have either changed their residence, passed away, or do not meet citizenship criteria. Additionally, names of new eligible voters are added to maintain the integrity of the list.
He criticized opposition parties for attempting to politicize the issue, stating that the Supreme Court has clarified the legitimacy of the process. According to him, it is now evident that there is no ambiguity in the SIR process, which operates entirely within the legal framework.
Rao pointed out the contradiction in the opposition’s stance, as they oppose the process while simultaneously participating in the electoral process. He called for all political parties to adhere to the guidelines set by the Election Commission.
He noted that similar SIR processes have occurred in the past, including during the Congress government’s tenure, making the current controversy unjustified.
BJP leader Manmeet Singh also welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling, stating that the party respects the judiciary’s decision. He remarked that the opposition frequently questions the electoral process, yet those same parties participate once it commences.
Singh reiterated that the Election Commission’s goal is to create a clear, fair, and reliable voter list to strengthen the democratic process. Regular checks, removals, and additions of names are essential for this purpose.
Bihar government minister Shravan Kumar expressed his support for the Supreme Court’s decision, stating, “This ruling is a strong response to those in the opposition who have tried to mislead the people of Bihar with falsehoods and baseless allegations against the Election Commission.”
