Fort Worth, May 27: Indian-American stars Akshay Bhatia and Sahil Theegala are set to compete in the prestigious Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club this week.
Indian-origin golfers are making a significant impact on the PGA Tour, and all eyes will be on these players. Both Bhatia and Theegala are capable of competing among a strong field at one of the tour’s most historic events.
At just 24 years old, Bhatia has already secured three PGA Tour victories. He aims to regain the impressive form that led him to win a ‘signature event’ earlier this season. Although his recent performances have been somewhat lackluster, this left-handed player remains one of the most exciting talents on tour, consistently proving his ability to bounce back from challenging situations.
Bhatia’s past results at Colonial have been mixed. Despite competing three times, he has only finished in the top 25 once. However, if he can find his rhythm early in the week, the course’s design could benefit his creative shot-making style. Bhatia’s aggressive approach and calmness under pressure make him a formidable contender whenever he is in top form.
On the other hand, Theegala is on the hunt for his second PGA Tour title following his first major victory in 2023. This California native has consistently made his presence felt on the leaderboard over the past two seasons.
Theegala has delivered several impressive performances this year but has yet to claim a tournament victory. Nevertheless, his versatile game seems well-suited for Colonial’s classic design.
Also participating in the tournament is Indian-Canadian golfer Sudarshan Yellamraju, whose success story is one of the most inspiring among Indian-origin golfers. This self-taught professional made a significant impression by finishing in the top 10 at ‘The Players Championship’ earlier this season, and he aims to maintain that momentum in this star-studded event.
However, Indian-British golfer Aaron Rai, who recently won the PGA Championship at Aronimink, will not be competing this week. The Charles Schwab Challenge, now in its 80th edition at Colonial, has attracted many big names in the sport, including Ludwig Aberg, Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Russell Henley, and defending champion Ben Griffin.
