Government Cuts CNG Price in Karnal by ₹1 per kg; New Rates Effective from Today

CNG
New Delhi:
In a welcome move for CNG vehicle owners, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has reduced the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by ₹1 per kilogram in Karnal, Haryana. The revised rate of ₹83.43 per kg came into effect from 6:00 AM on Monday, June 9, 2025. While this reduction currently applies only to Karnal, it signals the beginning of a possible nationwide adjustment in CNG pricing.

The announcement comes shortly after the government reduced the price of natural gas, which forms the base input for both CNG and PNG (Piped Natural Gas). This reduction is the first to be implemented under the revised pricing formula introduced in April 2023.

Government Reduces Natural Gas Price

The central government recently slashed the price of natural gas from $6.75 to $6.41 per MMBTU (million British thermal units) for fields allocated to ONGC and other producers without auction. This roughly 5% decrease in natural gas prices was expected to lower CNG rates as well, though experts had cautioned that the benefit might not fully reach end consumers due to rising input and operational costs faced by city gas distributors.

Despite this, IGL has become the first major distributor to partially pass on the relief to users — beginning with Karnal.

Current CNG Prices in Key Cities

While the reduction is currently limited to one city, here’s a look at the latest CNG prices across major regions:

  • Delhi – ₹77.09

  • Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad – ₹85.70

  • Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Shamli – ₹87.08

  • Gurgaon – ₹83.12

  • Rewari – ₹83.70

  • Kaithal – ₹84.43

  • Kanpur, Hamirpur, Fatehpur – ₹89.92

  • Ajmer, Pali – ₹86.94

  • Updated Karnal Price – ₹83.43

In some cities like Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Shamli, the price of CNG has already crossed ₹90 per kg, making even a minor reduction a welcome relief for frequent commuters and commercial vehicle operators.

Will Other Cities Follow?

Industry analysts believe that IGL’s move could pave the way for similar reductions in other cities, especially if global gas prices remain soft and input costs stabilize. However, given the financial pressures faced by distribution companies, the pass-through of price cuts may be gradual and partial.

For now, the residents of Karnal stand to benefit the most, with transport and daily commute costs expected to ease slightly.
