
Aizawl, May 26: The Secretary of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Binod Kumar, announced on Tuesday that a nationwide campaign for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is underway to ensure clean, transparent, and accurate voter lists.
Kumar held a meeting in Aizawl with the District Election Officer (DEO), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, supervisors, and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to discuss the preparations for SIR.
He emphasized the importance of this process across the country and expressed hope that all officials involved would perform their duties with dedication, integrity, and transparency.
Kumar urged EROs and BLOs to thoroughly understand the rules and procedures related to SIR and to execute their responsibilities with utmost sincerity.
The ECI official also instructed that counting forms should be distributed within five days.
During the meeting, Kumar stated that the purpose was not only to review the preparations and progress for SIR but also to listen to any doubts, clarifications, or difficulties faced by officials and provide essential guidance where necessary.
He provided detailed instructions and crucial guidelines regarding the official procedures for conducting SIR.
In the meeting, Aizawl’s District Election Officer, Lalhariyatpuia, presented a PowerPoint on the preparations and progress made by Aizawl district for the SIR operations.
Currently, Aizawl district encompasses 12 assembly constituencies and 324 polling stations. After the meeting, Binod Kumar visited the polling station at Government Middle School, Jemabok West. ECI Section Officer Vijay Gupta was also present during the meeting.
Meanwhile, following the ECI’s announcement on May 14, seven northeastern states have begun preparations for the SIR of voter lists.
The ECI had announced on May 14 the phased implementation of SIR for voter lists in 16 states and three Union Territories.
The Commission stated that Phase III of SIR will be a significant nationwide campaign aimed at enhancing the accuracy, inclusiveness, and transparency of voter lists.
Among the 16 states, seven are from the northeastern region, including Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura. Assam has already completed the ‘special revision’ process, and the ECI published the final voter lists on February 10, covering all 126 assembly constituencies in the state.
