Five Police Officers Suspended Following Attack on Youth Congress Workers

Thiruvananthapuram, May 26: Five police officers, including a security personnel for former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, have been suspended following an attack on two Youth Congress workers during the ‘Nava Kerala Yatra’ organized by the previous LDF government. The suspended officers are Anil Kumar, Sandeep, Vipin, Shyaju, and Arun, pending a departmental inquiry.

This action follows the findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report, which concluded that officials unlawfully used force and weapons against Youth Congress and KSU workers during protests in Alappuzha in December 2023.

The SIT was established shortly after V.D. Satheesan became the new Chief Minister, who had previously promised during the assembly election campaign that the UDF government would take strict action against those who attacked student and youth workers.

During the incident, police officers were seen exiting the Chief Minister’s security vehicle and attacking protesters holding black flags by the roadside. Vijayan defended the actions of his security personnel, labeling it a ‘defensive operation’ to ensure his safety.

The state police chief is expected to submit the detailed SIT report to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, who will likely make the final decision on disciplinary and potential criminal action against senior officials.

The case against Ajit Kumar has intensified due to allegations of suppressing a security breach report presented by former Alappuzha police chief Chaitra Teresa John. The government is also investigating whether criminal charges, including falsifying records, can be filed against the ADGP.

These developments could significantly impact Ajit Kumar’s prospects for promotion to DGP in July. Following the formation of the new UDF government, indications suggest that more officials may face action as the investigation into one of Kerala’s most controversial political-policing incidents expands.

Fearing arrest, these officers have filed for anticipatory bail in the local district court in Alappuzha. The court has requested the police report and has currently stayed the proceedings.
