Chandigarh, February 25: Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda has accused the Haryana government of attempting to suppress the right to protest. The Haryana Congress is voicing its opposition to the termination of the MGNREGA scheme.
In a media interaction, Hooda emphasized that disagreement between the ruling party and the opposition is a hallmark of democracy. He criticized the BJP-led government for ending the MGNREGA scheme and cutting 1.4 million Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards. “We are planning a protest regarding these issues,” he stated.
Hooda asserted that protesting on such matters is the opposition’s right and a fundamental democratic right of the people. “I have never seen a government issue notices to prevent protests like this. I have been a member of the largest parliamentary body for 22 years. Whenever there is an issue from Delhi to Chandigarh, we protest. The BJP used to do this when they were in opposition. The police have acted like they are placing many leaders under house arrest,” he added.
Regarding the arrest of Indian Youth Congress President Uday Bhanu Chhib, Hooda remarked that detaining youth Congress workers and placing them in police custody for four days is a warning sign for our democracy. “The authoritarian government forgets that raising voices and asking questions is not a crime but a part of democracy,” he stated.
Haryana Congress Chief Rao Narendra Singh mentioned on social media that district presidents, their teams, and senior leaders from various districts, including Faridabad, Hisar, Mahendragarh, Karnal, Sonipat, Panipat, Rohtak, Palwal, and Ambala, have been placed under house arrest.
“This attempt to suppress peaceful democratic protests shows that the BJP government is afraid of the people’s voice. Evading public questions and confining workers to their homes goes against the spirit of democracy. You cannot stop us from raising the voice of the people. Remember, thoughts cannot be imprisoned. We stand with the power of the Constitution, and this fight for public interest will continue,” he concluded.
