Unique Temple in Lakhimpur Kheri: Where the Shiva Lingam Changes Color Three Times a Day

Lakhimpur Kheri, March 13: India is home to many extraordinary temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, each with its own fascinating stories and architectural marvels. One such temple is located in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, which is known for its unique features. This temple, based on ‘Tantra Vidya,’ is notable for the worship of frogs, and it houses Nandi Maharaj in a standing posture.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, the Frog Temple, or Narmadeshwar Mahadev Temple, is built in the shape of a giant frog, where worship of the frog takes place. A remarkable aspect of this temple is that Nandi Maharaj, the vehicle of Lord Shiva, is not seated but stands upright, serving Lord Shiva. It is believed to be the only temple in India where Nandi is depicted standing in service to the deity. This extraordinary temple is situated in the town of Oyal, approximately 12 kilometers from Lakhimpur on the route to Sitapur.

The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is renowned for its unique Tantric architecture based on ‘Mandook Tantra.’ It was constructed between 1860 and 1870 by the then king of the Oyal state. The temple spans an area of 18 x 25 square meters, built behind the massive frog figure. The frog’s face measures about 2 x 1.5 x 1 cubic meters and faces north. The main entrance of the temple is located to the east, while a second entrance is on the south side. A high octagonal platform resembling the Shri Yantra is built on the frog’s back, accessible via stairs.

At the top lies the sanctum sanctorum, where a three-foot-high white marble ‘Argha’ is installed. This Argha features intricate lotus carvings and hosts the ‘Narmadeshwar Shivling,’ believed to have been brought from ‘Banasur Pradari Narameshwar Naradada Kand.’ The entrance to the sanctum also faces east, and there is a circumambulatory path outside. The temple walls are adorned with exquisite carvings and Tantric symbols.

This Shiva temple serves as a center for balance, prosperity, and positive energy. Frogs are considered symbols of water and fertility here, making their worship particularly significant in Tantric traditions. Devotees worship both the Shiva Lingam and the frog, believing it brings stability and abundance into their lives. According to local belief, the color of the Shiva Lingam changes three times throughout the day.

The standing posture of Nandi is the temple’s most distinctive feature. In most Shiva temples, Nandi is depicted seated; however, here he appears to stand in protection and service to Lord Shiva. This unique statue astonishes devotees and enhances the temple’s divine aura. The Frog Temple is not only a religious site but also an important center for the study of architecture and Tantra Vidya. Visitors often experience spiritual energy here, referring to it as a ‘place of divine experience.’

Reaching Oyal is convenient, with buses and taxis readily available from Lakhimpur Kheri. For those traveling by train or flight, the nearest airport and railway station is in Lucknow, approximately 135 kilometers away. Regular buses operate from Lucknow to Lakhimpur.
