London, March 16: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with US President Donald Trump about the current situation in the Middle East and the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on global maritime trade.
According to a report by the Xinhua news agency, during their conversation on Sunday evening, Starmer stressed the urgent need to reopen this crucial maritime route to restore normal shipping traffic and alleviate rising costs worldwide. Both leaders agreed to maintain ongoing communication regarding developments in the Middle East.
Earlier on Sunday, UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the best and most sustainable way to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is to end the ongoing conflict. He warned that the current situation is harming the global economy.
Miliband told British media that the sharp increase in oil and gas prices is primarily due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. He also mentioned that the UK aims to work with its allied nations to facilitate the reopening of this maritime route.
On Saturday, Trump announced on social media that several countries would send their warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, although he did not provide further details.
On February 28, Israel and the United Nations jointly attacked Tehran and other Iranian cities, resulting in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, several senior military commanders, and over 1,300 civilians.
