Bhopal, May 13: Hundreds from the Muslim community protested in Bhopal on Tuesday against the recent attack and alleged public humiliation of a young Muslim man at a hotel in Govindpura.
Demonstrators demanded the immediate arrest of the assailants, claiming that police present during the incident failed to intervene.
Led by Qazi Syed Mushtaq Ali Nadvi, the protest warned of a citywide shutdown if the attackers were not apprehended within 24 hours.
While rallying at the Qaziat complex, community members condemned the attack and the use of offensive language during the incident.
Addressing the crowd, Qazi Nadvi described the assault as not just an attack on an individual but an assault on communal harmony and religious sentiments.
Later, the protesters marched towards the police control room, chanting slogans and demanding stringent action.
Among the participants were All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Mohsin Ali, Congress MLA Arif Masood, and Atif Akil.
Community representatives submitted a memorandum to Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar, urging the immediate arrest and departmental action against the officers allegedly negligent during the incident.
Qazi Nadvi stated, “This case is not limited to physical assault; the use of offensive language has deeply hurt religious sentiments. Police were present at the scene, yet they supported the criminals. Such incidents create an atmosphere of fear in Bhopal and poison the environment.”
Commissioner Sanjay Kumar informed the media that the police are investigating all aspects of the case, including the conduct of the officers present. They will also question those officers. If found guilty, departmental action will be initiated. A criminal case has already been registered, and teams are working to identify and arrest the accused. The police are reviewing video footage of the incident.
The incident occurred on Sunday when a group allegedly assaulted a Muslim youth named Arif Khan outside a hotel in Gautam Nagar, Govindpura. He was accused of having a relationship with a woman of another faith, and the assailants reportedly smeared ink and dung on his face.
Police stated that the woman confirmed she had been in a consensual live-in relationship with Khan for five years.
