Sinner Matches Djokovics Masters Record at Italian Open Quarterfinals

Rome, May 13: World number one Jannik Sinner made history by reaching the quarterfinals of the Italian Open on Tuesday. He defeated fellow Italian Andrea Pellegrino in straight sets, equaling Novak Djokovic’s record for consecutive wins at the ATP Masters 1000 level. Sinner will face either Andrey Rublev or Nikoloz Basilashvili in the semifinals.

The previous season’s finalist has now reached his third quarterfinal in Rome, becoming only the second Italian male player to achieve this feat in the Open Era, following Adriano Panatta.

In front of a packed Campo Centrale stadium, Sinner delivered an impressive performance, winning 6-2, 6-3. This victory marked his 31st consecutive win at the Masters 1000 level, tying him with Djokovic’s record.

The top-seeded Italian has been nearly unstoppable on tour for the past six months. If he wins his quarterfinal match this weekend, he will be very close to claiming this record outright. Sinner’s remarkable winning streak began at the end of last season and includes titles from Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid. Recently, he became the first player to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles in Madrid.

At just 24 years old, Sinner is also in pursuit of another significant achievement. Having won 8 out of the 9 available Masters 1000 titles on the ATP Tour, he aims to become only the second player after Djokovic to achieve the ‘Career Golden Masters’ title.

Pellegrino was making his debut in the main draw of a Masters 1000 tournament and created several memorable moments with his impressive drop shots, sliced forehands, and aggressive baseline play. He fought hard to make the second set more competitive. At 3-2 down, he had two golden opportunities for break points, but Sinner quickly ramped up his game to respond.

After leveling the second set at 3-3, Sinner raised the intensity, breaking Pellegrino’s serve to take a 4-3 lead and comfortably closing out the match in just one hour and 28 minutes.

Sinner’s dominance over Italian players continues, and with this victory, his unblemished record against his compatriots on tour now stands at 19-0.
