South African Minister Ronald Lamola Arrives in India for BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting

New Delhi, May 13: South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, has arrived in India for the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for May 14 and 15. His arrival was warmly welcomed by the Ministry of External Affairs ahead of the BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting.

Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on the social media platform ‘X’, expressing, “A heartfelt welcome to South Africa’s Minister Ronald Lamola upon his arrival in New Delhi for the BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting.”

Previously, the 17th BRICS Summit took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Ministry has shared details regarding the schedule for the upcoming summit.

According to the Ministry, the foreign ministers will arrive at Bharat Mandapam at 10 AM on May 14, followed by the first session starting at 10:30 AM. A joint meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled for 1 PM at ‘Seva Teerth’.

The second session will commence at 3:10 PM, and a dinner hosted by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will take place at Bharat Mandapam at 7 PM. The next day, May 15, the third session will begin at 10 AM.

The 13th BRICS Summit was held in India on September 9, 2021, with the theme ‘BRICS 15: Intra-BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation, and Consensus’. Leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration, marking BRICS’s 15th anniversary, emphasizing improvements in the multilateral system, counter-terrorism cooperation, the use of digital tools to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and enhancing transactions among people.

India has streamlined BRICS operations, making discussions more accessible and initiating new ministerial-level tracks, such as the Digital Health Summit and the first Water Ministers’ Meeting.

Foreign ministers from Brazil, Russia, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia are expected to participate in the meeting. Sources indicate that there will be representation from the UAE at the deputy foreign minister level, while a delegation from China is also anticipated.

Additionally, according to information shared on the official ‘X’ account of the Iranian government, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi will visit India to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting.

During his visit, Araghchi is expected to discuss regional stability, multilateral cooperation, and economic resilience with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other counterparts.
