Rafael Leão: The Portuguese Mbappé Making Waves in Football

New Delhi, May 13: Rafael Leão, the strong-winged player from Portugal, has carved a niche in the football world with his speed, dribbling, and aggressive play. Starting his career at Sporting CP, he later shone while playing for AC Milan.

Born on June 10, 1999, in Almada, Portugal, Leão began his journey at just nine years old with Sporting CP in Lisbon. Initially, he wanted to join Benfica, but after signing a contract at a young age, he withdrew due to the club’s training ground being too far for his family to manage financially. Thus, he opted to join Sporting CP, where he progressed through various levels. Nearly a decade later, he made his senior team debut in a match against Feirense, replacing Bryan Ruiz.

However, a controversial incident in June 2018 forced Leão to leave the club. During training, he and several other players were attacked, resulting in injuries to many players and staff. Disturbed by the incident, Leão decided to part ways with the club, terminating his contract that same year.

After leaving, he signed with Lille OSC in France. In his debut season, Leão scored eight goals and provided two assists in 26 Ligue 1 matches, helping the team qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

In August 2019, Lille struck a deal with AC Milan for a reported fee of €35 million, including a 20% sell-on clause, securing Leão for five years. He played a pivotal role in helping the team win the Serie A title and reach the Champions League.

Leão is not only skilled at providing decisive passes but also adept at breaking through opposing defenses with his dribbling. He possesses the ability to lead counterattacks and score stunning goals. On December 20, 2020, he scored a remarkable goal against Sassuolo just 6.2 seconds into a Serie A match.

Fans have dubbed Rafael Leão the ‘Portuguese Mbappé’ due to their shared attributes of speed, excellent dribbling, and goal-scoring prowess.

At just 26 years old, Leão also has a passion for music. He runs a YouTube channel called ‘WAY 45,’ featuring his composed songs. He is the youngest Portuguese player to score ten or more goals in a single season. On May 2, 2022, he made history by scoring against Fiorentina while playing for AC Milan.

Leão was part of the team that won the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2016 and made his debut for the Portugal senior national team on October 9, 2021.

The Portuguese team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup looks promising. Led by Cristiano Ronaldo, they clinched their second Nations League title in 2025. As one of Europe’s strongest teams, Portugal aims to end their World Cup title drought. It will be intriguing to see if Rafael Leão, who participated in the FIFA World Cup 2022 and UEFA 2024, can help realize this dream for his country.
