Tensions Rise at India-Myanmar Border Following Fire in Molnoi Village

Imphal, May 13: Tensions have escalated along the unstable border between Manipur’s Kamjong district and Myanmar after a fire incident in the Kukis’ Molnoi village. Conflicting reports and sharp accusations have emerged, igniting discussions on social media. Local community leaders quickly refuted the claims, while official sources issued clarifications.

On Tuesday afternoon, reports began circulating on social media that NSCN (IM) affiliated militants had crossed the border and set fire to Molnoi village. Initial claims from Kukis’ social media handles suggested that this attack targeted their community in the border area.

Government officials promptly acted to dismiss rumors of violence occurring on Indian soil. They confirmed that Molnoi village is entirely located within Myanmar, approximately two kilometers from Border Pillar (BP) number 113. The official report clearly stated that this incident is not related to India and is an internal matter of Myanmar.

In a formal press release late Tuesday night, the Eastern Command of the Naga Village Guard (NVG) categorically denied any involvement of the Tangkhul Naga community in the attack. The NVG described the claims circulating on social media as baseless and an attempt to tarnish the image of the Tangkhul community. The statement highlighted that Molnoi is reportedly a center for the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B), a group currently engaged in conflict with Myanmar’s military junta.

The NVG suggested that the attack on the Kukis in Molnoi could be a consequence of the ongoing internal turmoil in Myanmar. They rejected the unfounded accusations and condemned attempts to tarnish the reputation of the Tangkhul Naga community.

The NVG indicated that the arson might be a result of the ongoing civil war in Myanmar, hinting that these allegations could be a pretext for justifying future attacks on Naga border villages.
