Victims Mother Sees Hope for Justice in Kolkatas Nabanna

Kolkata, May 13: Ratna Debnath, the mother of the victim in the RG Kar rape and murder case, expressed optimism for justice after her respectful treatment by Kolkata police at the state secretariat, Nabanna. Debnath, who is also a newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator, stated that this interaction signifies a “victory” for her daughter.

Speaking to reporters, Debnath recounted a troubling incident from August 9, 2025, when she was allegedly assaulted by police during the previous Trinamool Congress government’s “Nabanna campaign.” “Back then, I was not allowed to reach Nabanna, but yesterday, the police saluted me. They even took pictures with me and touched my feet for blessings. Despite the sorrow in my life, that moment brought me joy,” she said.

Debnath remains determined to fight for justice for her daughter, asserting, “I will not back down until justice is served.” She warned that without accountability in her daughter’s case, similar incidents will continue to occur nationwide.

She expressed hope that severe penalties for the accused could reduce crimes against women. “This is because influential people are involved in this case,” she alleged.

Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court, led by Justice Rajshekhar Mantha, has recused itself from hearing the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case. The bench cited an overwhelming caseload, suggesting that the state government might form a judicial commission to address the matter.

In response to the court’s decision, Ratna Debnath stated, “The Bengal government has proposed to form a commission. We will discuss this with the Chief Minister and decide on forming a committee.”
