Khartoum, February 12: A tragic boat capsizing in northern Sudan has resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals. This information was reported by the Xinhua News Agency, citing sources from Sudan’s Civil Defense Authority.
The incident occurred while the boat was navigating between the villages of Taiba Al-Khawad and Deim Al-Karai in the Nile River province. Over 27 passengers were aboard, including women, the elderly, and children. Reports indicate that the boat overturned due to high waves.
Following the capsizing, a team from the Civil Defense Unit arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, by that time, more than 15 people had already drowned. All bodies were recovered, but four individuals remain missing, while eight others were rescued.
Meanwhile, the Sudan Doctors Network confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that over 15 bodies had been retrieved. Local residents and the Civil Defense Force are continuing the search for the remaining missing passengers.
The organization raised concerns about the inadequacies in river transport safety and the lack of basic safety standards. They urged relevant authorities to deploy specialized rescue teams and recovery equipment to expedite the search efforts. Additionally, they called for immediate actions to enhance river transport safety and prevent such tragedies in the future.
Accidents involving traditional boats are common in Sudan, as these vessels are used to cross the Nile River, particularly in areas where bridges are scarce, especially in rural regions. Civil Defense officials have warned about the dangers of traveling in wooden boats, particularly during the flood season, to prevent drowning incidents.
