Pune, May 31: Supriya Sule, the acting president of the NCP (SP) and a Member of Parliament, has demanded that Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar be placed on mandatory leave amid ongoing protests related to a recent alcohol tragedy that claimed 16 lives due to illegal drinking.
Sule pointed out that according to a report from the Union Home Ministry, Pune has emerged as the top city in Maharashtra for crime and ranks fifth nationwide. She stated that the law and order situation in Pune has completely deteriorated.
Speaking to reporters, Sule emphasized, “The report from the Home Ministry clearly states that Pune ranks first in the state and fifth in the country for crime. Therefore, the Police Commissioner of Pune should be sent on mandatory leave immediately. We trust the Chief Minister; we had faith in him during the Nasrapur incident as well. The police quickly filed a chargesheet, but these crimes must be prevented. This is a complete failure of the government. Crimes are being committed under the guise of extortion and bribery.”
Sule also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that while BJP leaders often chant the slogan of a ‘Congress-free India,’ a closer look at the Ahmednagar district reveals that the entire BJP leadership, except for Ram Shinde, is composed of former Congress members.
She questioned the BJP’s commitment to creating a ‘Congress-free’ India, noting that former Congress legislators and MPs from Ahmednagar have now joined the BJP. “People wanted change, but what has really changed?” she asked.
Sule remarked that the same 100 families that were once part of Congress are now part of the BJP. “What revolution has occurred in Maharashtra? It is their internal matter from which assembly seat they contest, but I want to ask the BJP if ‘Congress-free India’ means absorbing the entire Congress party into yours?”
She expressed concern for the old and loyal BJP workers who have now been sidelined. “What about those workers who stood by the BJP’s ideology, faced lathi charges, and struggled when the party was in opposition? Where are they now? Where is Prakash Javadekar today? He used to criticize us vigorously in a democratic manner and was always aggressive in the House, but where has he gone? Does political ideology or merit hold any significance now?”
When asked about the ongoing internal strife among other leaders, Sule clarified her stance. “I do not know what is happening between the factions of Parth Pawar and Chhagan Bhujbal, nor am I interested. However, I received a video yesterday. I am not directly accusing anyone, but you should ask Bhujbal about this. A contractor from Bhujbal’s department claims that only a select few contractors have been given supply work over the past few years. If there is any corruption involved, it should be investigated.”
Sule stated that she will write a formal letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding this issue. She added, “I hope the Chief Minister will take action and protect the taxpayers’ money.”
