Mild Earthquake of 2.8 Magnitude Strikes Meghalaya

New Delhi, May 31: A mild earthquake was recorded in Meghalaya on Sunday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake registered a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located in the West Khasi Hills district.

The tremor occurred at 6:50 AM in the West Khasi Hills, positioned at a latitude of 25.488° N and a longitude of 90.995° E. The depth of the quake was reported to be 10 kilometers. It was approximately 77 kilometers west-northwest of Cherapunji.

So far, there have been no reports of damage or casualties. Due to the low magnitude and shallow depth, the impact was limited. Residents felt a slight tremor, but no significant harm has been reported.

Just hours earlier, the NCS recorded a moderate earthquake in Tajikistan, measuring 5.2 in magnitude. This quake occurred on May 31, 2026, at 2:45:57 AM IST, with an epicenter at a latitude of 38.187° N and a longitude of 73.742° E, at a depth of 120 kilometers. It was located about 305 kilometers east-northeast of Faizabad, Afghanistan.

Earthquake activity is considered normal in the Indian subcontinent, as the region lies on several active fault lines. Northeastern India, including Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, is particularly sensitive to seismic events due to the tectonic activities of the Indian and Eurasian plates.

It is noteworthy that Meghalaya experienced a devastating earthquake in 1897, which measured 8.1 on the Richter scale and affected thousands of people, marking it as one of the most catastrophic earthquakes in history.
