Goa, May 9: The Indian Coast Guard marked a significant enhancement in its capabilities by commissioning the indigenous warship ‘Achal’ at Goa Shipyard Limited on Saturday. This vessel is part of the next-generation ‘Indomitable-class’ fast patrol vessel series.
The commissioning ceremony was officiated by A. Ambarasu, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition) of the Ministry of Defence. Several senior officials from the Coast Guard and both central and state governments were in attendance.
Designed and built by Goa Shipyard Limited, this 51-meter-long ship sets a new benchmark in indigenous shipbuilding. With over 50% of its components sourced locally, ‘Achal’ underscores India’s ongoing progress towards self-reliance in the defense sector. It also highlights the alignment between the Coast Guard’s operational objectives and the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. The design of this vessel incorporates modern principles, focusing on efficiency, resilience, and rapid response capabilities.
Powered by two modern 3000-kilowatt diesel engines, this ship can reach a maximum speed of 27 nautical miles. It is capable of sustained operations for up to 1500 nautical miles. The vessel is equipped with controllable pitch propellers, high-precision gearboxes, and advanced control systems, enabling superior performance in various maritime conditions.
For security, the Indian Coast Guard ship ‘Achal’ is armed with a 30 mm CRN-91 gun and two 12.7 mm remote-controlled guns. Additionally, it features advanced technologies such as an integrated bridge system, integrated machinery control system, and automated power management system.
The ship will be stationed in Vadinar, Gujarat, and will operate under the Indian Coast Guard’s northwestern region command. Commandant (Junior Grade) Naveen Kumar will lead the vessel, supported by a team of five officers and 34 trained personnel. Officials state that the induction of ‘Achal’ will significantly bolster the security of India’s western maritime borders and enhance coastal surveillance capabilities.
Notably, ‘Achal’ translates to ‘steadfast’ or ‘unwavering,’ symbolizing the Indian Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment. It reflects our resolve to safeguard life at sea and protect our maritime boundaries. The commissioning of the Indian Coast Guard ship ‘Achal’ is a testament to the indomitable spirit of vigilance, resilience, and guardianship over India’s maritime domain. Standing firm, ‘Achal’ will defend national interests and uphold the trust of the people with unwavering dedication.
