IIT Delhi Alumni Excel in Civil Services and Corporate Leadership

New Delhi: Over 650 alumni of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are currently serving in civil services, including more than 270 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers. Additionally, over 100 alumni have made their mark in the Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Close to 10,000 IIT Delhi alumni hold leadership positions in banking, finance, manufacturing, and engineering sectors, with 70 percent residing within India. More than a thousand alumni occupy key roles in the boardrooms of major and diverse corporate systems, according to IIT Delhi’s recently released ‘Alumni Impact Report’.

The first-ever ‘Alumni Impact Report’ by IIT Delhi was unveiled on Tuesday by Dr. Gurtej S. Sandhu, an alumnus, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, the institute’s director. The report highlights the exceptional journeys and contributions of over 65,000 former students since the institution’s inception.

The release coincided with IIT Delhi’s 68th foundation day celebrations. Dr. Sandhu remarked, “Alumni are always seen as role models for the next generation of students. Their contributions to the institute extend beyond financial support to include mentorship and strengthening IIT’s global reputation through their work in various organizations.”

Prof. Banerjee elaborated on the significant impact IIT Delhi alumni have made nationally and internationally. “The report reveals that, over 65 years, IIT Delhi graduates have emerged as global leaders, pioneering entrepreneurs, and dedicated public servants, making deep economic and social contributions worldwide,” he said.

He further noted that IIT Delhi has consistently engaged with industries at both national and international levels. From its early years to its current status as a global leader in technical education, the institute has been a key driver of the global unicorn startup ecosystem. The report mentions over 2,500 companies founded or co-founded by IIT Delhi alumni.

According to the report, IIT Delhi alumni have played crucial roles in building prominent brands within the modern digital economy and have contributed to the creation of over 4.8 lakh direct jobs. The document also highlights the involvement of IIT alumni as industry leaders, venture capitalists, and faculty at top global institutions, underlining the institute’s influence beyond startups into governance and global education.

In the public sector, more than 250 IIT Delhi alumni hold senior positions in government enterprises, regulatory bodies, and scientific missions. The institute’s contribution to national security is notable, with its naval construction wing having trained over 700 officers for the Indian Navy. Additionally, over 50 alumni serve as faculty at top 100 QS-ranked universities, while more than 300 are on faculty at other IITs.

The report also shines a light on the success of IIT Delhi’s endowment fund, the Akshay Nidhi, supported by alumni donations for research development. To date, pledges amount to ₹477 crore, with ₹338 crore already received. The 2000 batch alone pledged over ₹70 crore during their Silver Jubilee reunion in December 2025. These funds have enabled support for more than 75 academic chairs and over 115 awards for researchers.

Moreover, the institute offers over 137 scholarships and international travel grants to deserving students, fostering academic excellence and global exposure.
