Mumbai, May 22: In a landmark ruling, a fast-track court has sentenced Sukveer Singh to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a young woman. The decision was made by Additional Sessions Judge Vijay Kumar Singh, who presided over the fast-track court for crimes against women.
According to the prosecution, 31-year-old Sukveer Singh, a resident of Nagla Pohpi in Mathura, had been in a romantic relationship with the victim for nearly six years. However, when the victim’s family arranged her marriage to another man on December 10, 2020, Singh became enraged. Unable to accept that his girlfriend would marry someone else, he plotted to eliminate her.
On December 2, 2020, while the victim was shopping for wedding items, Singh contacted her via WhatsApp, luring her to the Gopi Krishna Guest House at Mathura Barrage. He took her to room number 12, where he forcibly raped her. Subsequently, he deceived her into the bathroom and shot her in the temple with a .315 bore pistol he had concealed. The victim died instantly from the gunshot wound.
The sound of the gunfire caused panic in the guest house, prompting Singh to call the police himself to report the incident. Upon arrival, the police forced open the room door and arrested Singh. Inside the bathroom, they discovered the victim’s lifeless body, covered in blood. During the search, authorities recovered the weapon used in the murder, a spent cartridge, and four live rounds from Singh’s pocket.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented testimonies from 11 witnesses, along with the post-mortem and forensic reports, which provided compelling evidence. The post-mortem confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. Considering all the evidence and arguments, the court found Sukveer Singh guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment, with a directive to account for the time already served.
