Odisha Confirms Three Deaths Due to Heat Stroke Amid Severe Weather Warnings

Bhubaneswar, May 22: The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) of Odisha has confirmed three fatalities due to heat stroke in the state. The deaths were reported in the districts of Bolangir, Sundargarh, and Suvarnapur.

According to the report, there were initial concerns about 16 potential deaths; however, four cases were ruled out following post-mortem examinations, leaving three confirmed fatalities. Investigations into the remaining cases are ongoing.

The report also provided insights into the weather conditions. It noted that light to very light rain was recorded in some areas of coastal and southern interior Odisha, while northern interior districts remained dry.

The SRC has issued a severe weather warning for the coming days. There is a likelihood of heatwave conditions persisting in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bolangir, and Nayagarh districts. Additionally, warnings for thunderstorms and lightning, accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, have been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack. Similar conditions are expected in Kionjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh, where winds may reach 30 to 40 kilometers per hour.

According to the meteorological department, an average of 0.8 millimeters of rain was recorded in the state over the past 24 hours, with the highest rainfall of 26 millimeters noted in the Jajpur block of Jajpur district.

In terms of district-wise impacts, two individuals and four livestock were reported dead due to lightning in Jajpur. In Kionjhar, three fatalities were attributed to a tornado, while one person died from lightning in Dhenkanal.

In conclusion, the SRC stated that the situation remains normal at present. However, given the changing weather conditions, vigilance is essential.
