Bihar Cracks Down on Illegal Sand and Stone Mining Mobs

Patna: The Bihar government has intensified its crackdown on illegal sand and stone mining mafias across the state. In December 2025, a widespread campaign was launched by the Department of Mines and Geology to dismantle these unlawful operations.

Over the course of the month-long drive, officials conducted raids at 4,582 locations targeting illegal mining, transportation, and storage activities. As a result, 574 vehicles were seized, 248 First Information Reports (FIRs) registered, and numerous arrests made, delivering a significant blow to the mining mafia.

According to departmental data, Aurangabad district witnessed the highest number of raids with 331 operations, while Patna district recorded the most arrests related to illegal mining, totaling 15.

Large-scale sand mining is reported in rivers such as the Falgu in the Magadh region, the Son in Shahabad, and the Ganga in Patna. Other rivers like Gandak, Kosi, Budhi Gandak, Parman, Kamla Balan, and several others are also affected by such activities.

Stone mining continues extensively in the hills of Aurangabad, Gaya, Rohtas, and Kaimur districts.

Officials emphasized that this campaign represents a firm effort to eradicate the illegal mining network from its roots.

Under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister and Mines and Geology Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, regular monitoring and stringent reviews have visibly improved the department’s revenue performance.

By December 2025, the department achieved 102 percent of its annual revenue target, surpassing expectations. This success is attributed to curbing illegal mining and promoting lawful mining activities.

The department has clarified that in areas with repeated illegal mining complaints, investigations will extend beyond mining operators to include responsible administrative units as well.

Mining officers in all districts have been instructed to take prompt and decisive action on every complaint received.

The state government believes that encouraging legal and organised mining will not only enhance revenue but also generate local employment opportunities, contributing to sustainable economic growth.
