China and the U.S. Should Foster Favorable Conditions for Bilateral Agricultural Trade: Chinese Commerce Ministry

Beijing, May 21: During a regular press conference held by the Chinese Commerce Ministry, spokesperson He Yadong addressed questions regarding China’s purchase of American agricultural products. He emphasized that agricultural trade is a crucial component of economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States.

Following recent trade discussions, both nations expressed positive agreements on resolving non-tariff barriers and market access issues for certain agricultural products. They have also reached a theoretical consensus on including relevant products within the framework of mutual tariff reductions. Additionally, guiding targets have been established to enhance bilateral trade in agricultural goods. Both sides must create favorable conditions for agricultural trade and promote the restoration and continuous expansion of trade cooperation in this sector.

Recent media reports indicate that the European Commission is developing a new trade tool to address China’s “excess production capacity” issue. In this context, He Yadong remarked that if trade surpluses are used to label something as “excess production capacity,” then shouldn’t all goods exported from the European Union, such as cars, pharmaceuticals, wine, and cosmetics, also be considered affected by “excess production capacity”? He noted that relevant countries are investigating the European Union’s “excess production capacity” issue and urged the EU not to adopt double standards in such circumstances. He called on the EU to confront reality, return to the correct path of dialogue and consultation, and engage in actions that genuinely benefit the development of China-Europe economic and trade relations.
